Life After Death, What’s Heaven Like?

Movies, novels, and folklore have all influenced what you think about heaven. If you believe in heaven or not, you have some ideas about what it will be like. Every major religion has a view of heaven, but what about Christians? What do they think heaven will be like?

John Eldridge describes in The Journey of Desire, an image I can relate to.

“Nearly every Christian I have spoken with has some idea that eternity is an un-ending church service… We have settled on an image of the never-ending sing –along in the sky,….. And our heart sinks. Forever and ever? That’s it? That’s the good news? And then we sigh and feel guilty that we are not more ‘spiritual.’ We lose heart, and we turn once more to the present to find what life we can.”

Is that true? What will Heaven be like? Where do we go when we die? We all want to know what the destination after this life will be like.

I believe God has placed within all humans an understanding of the eternal. We all have a sense that we will live forever somewhere. But what specifically happens after death? Where do we go?

Jesus provides illumination in his words of comfort to his disciples before his death.

My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?

John 14:2

Heaven like Jesus describes is mapped out in great detail in the Bible. Dr Randy Alcorn provides great insights in his book Heaven. On my older edition the cover says, “The Next Time You Hear Someone Say, “We Can’t Begin To Imagine what Heaven Will Be Like,” You’ll Be Able To Tell Them, “ I can.”

This great resource applies to and can inspire all of us. You don’t have to be a Christian. Stats Canada says over 82.3% of Canadians believe in God but most don’t know much about Heaven.

Randy Alcorn sums it up nicely how it’s off our radar screens. “Imagine you’re part of a NASA trip preparing for a five-year mission to Mars. After a period of extensive training, the launch date finally arrives. As the rocket lifts off, one of your fellow astronauts says to you, ‘What do you know about Mars?’ Imagine shrugging your shoulders and saying, ‘Nothing. We never talked about it. I guess we’ll find out when we get there.’ It’s unthinkable, isn’t it? It’s inconceivable that your training would not have included extensive study of and preparation for your ultimate destination. Yet in seminaries, Bible schools, and churches across the United States and around the world, there is very little teaching about your ultimate destination; the new Heavens and the New Earth.”

Picture Heaven the way the Bible describes it: a new life in real bodies, with God on a New Earth. As someone who has done 25 years of extensive research having written over 27 books, some of them fiction, he can string together all the clues in the Bible into one complete comprehensive and definitive guide on Heaven.

Everyone can be more successful in this life, as well as the life to come, by reading Heaven by Randy Alcorn.

Attitude:            Consider your attitude towards Heaven.

Action:                Order Heaven and listen or read your way to an understanding of a bright, alive and physical New Earth.

Question:           Have you ever given any serious thought to what Heaven will be like?

  1. I am in the midst of reading Heaven by Randy Alcorn, and would highly recommend it to anyone. Each chapter is broken into subsections, and is perfect for use as a daily devotional.

  2. heaven will be like or are like at this present time. Heaven exist today but us who are living on earth can not yet see and the pictures that we have seen of it cannot describe it accurately an all its splendor, beauty, majesty and splendor. And those who died in the faith in Jesus Christ are said to be present with the Lord and since is seated at the right hand of the Father on His throne they are in heaven right now.
